Spain Crowned World Champions
July 12th, 2010 by DaveTonight Spain were crowned World Champions after beating Holland 1-0 in extra time in a game that was rather fitting of a disappointing World Cup.
The game went the way many would have predicted before kick-off – the Spanish having the lion’s share of the ball with Holland closing down and looking to break quickly. And it almost worked for the Dutch who created the better of the chances against the run of play, Arjen Robben guilty of missing two 1 on 1′s with Iker Casillas.
A match riddled with fouls saw Howard Webb struggling to control the players. In Webb’s defence no-one wanted to see a rash red card in the World Cup final and when Johnny Heitinga was sent off in injury time it had been coming for the Dutch for a long time.
Spain struggled to find any fluidity with Hollands spoiler tactics disrupting their natural game but sure enough as they kept on plugging away looking for the gap, it eventually came late into injury time. Andres Iniesta springing the offside trap and drilling home with his right foot to put a new name on the World Cup and send all of Spain into a frenzy.
Overall, I think big things were expected of South Africa 2010 and it lived up to almost every single one – great passion, great stadiums, great people, great support. Unfortunately the one thing it really needed that it didn’t get enough of was good football and for that reason it’s been a disappointing World Cup

A good summary of the final in which the Spanish, Iker Casillas lead by example. Having 111 caps and he’s not even 30 yet, shows the experience he had and boy did he lead by it.
