Meet The Flops

As we close in on August there will be a host of new players in the Premier League this season. Manchester City leading the way in the transfer market splashing the cash in an attempt to break into the top 4. It’s always very exciting to see how the new players take to the premier league. Some will thrive, others will struggle – let’s take a look at the potential flops for the 2010/11 season…

David Silva
Silva arrives at Eastlands with World Cup and European medals but was something of a passenger in Spain’s World Cup winning squad. He looks a little lightweight for the physical nature of the English game and could take some time to adapt.

Milan Jovanovic
Serbian forward Milan Jovanovic signed for Liverpool on a 3 year deal and is expected to take some of the burden from Fernando Torres’s shoulders. It’s a big ask of the 29 year old who is taking a major step up after plying his trade in the Belgian league for the past 4 seasons. A bridge too far perhaps.

Sandro
Arrived at Tottenham in the summer after a wave of hype but after a run of poor showings from defensive minded Brazilians in the premier league Harry Redknapp will be hoping Sandro doesn’t turn into the next Kleberson, Anderson, Lucas… the list goes on.

Andy Carroll
Newcastle hitman Carroll bagged 17 goals in the championship last season as Newcastle won promotion, but history tells us that the step up to the premier league is a big one. Newcastle haven’t significantly strengthened their squad yet and goals will be hard to find for the Toon Army. Another David Nugent?

Joe Cole
Cole has got plenty of experience in the premier league but after an injury ravaged season Chelsea decided to let Cole go with Liverpool snapping him up. Big things are expected of Cole this season but Liverpool’s problems are deeper than just players and with Fernando Torres yet to commit his future to the club it could be another difficult season.

Marouane Chamakh
Chamakh had been linked with a move to Arsenal for a few seasons before his free transfer this summer. Chamakh averaged a goal in just over every 3 matches in his time at Bordeaux which may not be enough for Arsenal as they look to collect their first piece of silverware in 5 years.

  1. Dear Mr Football Banter,

‘Banter’ being the appropriate term in this case. I agree with all the foreign nancys and dyslexic balding cockney gimp Joey Cole… but Newcastle’s mighty #9 Andy Carroll has been slipped into this list purely to pander to a growing list of jealous anti newcastle fans. Carroll greedily helped himself to 17 majestic goals in the back end of a rough workman like championship. He’s a player that centre halves will fear, a fearless battering ram with a great first touch, awareness and powerful shot. Legendary Italian stopper Gigi Buffon commented after seeing a young Carroll play a “he’s a paintbrush striker, a future champion”. He should be on the ‘ones to watch’ list NOT ‘meet the flops’. 100/1 to be premiership top scorer by all accounts. More like 10/1.

Happy to eat my words if Carroll does turn out to be a hit this season. I don’t see him doing enough damage for Newcastle to finish in the top half of the table.

  3. Max Williams says:

Silva turned out to be quality, some say the best player in the premier league. Right about the others though, especially Andy Carroll.

  4. Dave says:

Yeah Silva has been one hell of a player for City so we have to apologise for that one! Sometimes you’ve got to take a punt.
