Henry Scores On Second Debut

It just had to happen didn’t it? The press were at the Emirates in their droves all waiting to get another glimpse of Thierry Henry turning out for Arsenal in a competitive game for the first time in 5 years, and you could sense they all knew what was coming.

Arsenal, superior in all areas to Leeds United were struggling to create any clear cut opportunities and not many had the faith that Marouane Chamakh would actually convert a chance should it present itself. The Moroccan striker has done little to endear himself to the Arsenal fans since joining in May 2010, scoring just 8 goals in 37 appearances. Leeds, well organised and defending in numbers kept Arsenal at bay. Van Persie, allowed a holiday to help recuperate after carrying the team for the large part of the season was needed. (more…)

Messi Collects Third Ballon D’or

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, quite clearly the best player in the world, last night picked up his 3rd Ballon d’Or award, pipping team mate Xavi Hernandez and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo to the prize.

Messi is only the fourth player in history to collect the award 3 times and finds himself among good company in Johan Cruyff, Marco Van Basten and Michel Platini.

Messi gained 47.88% of the vote, beating Ronaldo (21.6%) by some distance.

Real Madrid’s Ronaldo and coach Jose Mourinho did not attend the award ceremony in preparation for Real’s match this evening.

Transfer Rumours – 9 January 2012

FA Cup weekend is almost over with Arsenal playing Leeds United tonight. Expect goals from Thierry Henry if history is anything to go by. This weeks transfer roundup might well be filled with speculation about retired players returning to their previous clubs a la Paul Scholes. Here goes…

Harry Redknapp is interested in bringing Teddy Sheringham back to Spurs in a pay as you play deal. Oh ok, we made that one up. The press do it, why can’t we?

On to the real rumours…

Chelsea are looking to send out Gael Kakuta on loan to anyone that will have him. You can almost see the tumbleweed can’t you?

Manchester United are looking to poach Gary Cahill from under Chelsea’s nose.

Demba Ba has a release clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Newcastle if a £10m bid is received.

Manchester City have sent scouts to watch Cheik Tioté in the African Cup of Nations. They are also considering making a £60m bid for Wayne Rooney.

Arsene Wenger will prove he’s well and truly lost it by tabling a bid for Chelsea’s Salomon Kalou

That’s it for this week, it’s all quiet in the eye of the transfer window isn’t it? Everyone waiting for the first team to buy someone.

Warnock Sacked As QPR Look To Hughes

Neil WarnockNeil Warnock was sacked by QPR yesterday as Tony Fernandes seems set to turn to Mark Hughes to stabilise the club.

Under the outspoken Warnock, QPR have failed to win any of their last 8 league matches and are fast approaching the relegation battle. Fernandes may have been influenced by Martin O’Neill’s appointment at Sunderland which has seen their fortunes change considerably.

Warnock did a fantastic job in getting QPR promoted to the Premier League and up until his dismissal, had spent very little in the transfer market, perhaps Warnock deserved at least one transfer window with some money to spend.

QPR are today holding talks with former Manchester City manager and keen collector of average players Mark Hughes – a man that spent in excess of £35m on strikers Roque Santa Cruz and Jo during his time at City.

Former QPR player and manager Ray Wilkins offered this insightful piece of advice for the board “They will have to make the right decision”.

Nice one Ray!
