The 5 Best Football Cliches

January 1st, 2012 by

You can’t watch a football match without hearing a good few clichés, particularly if John Motson is commentating, here’s 10 of the best…

Well Organised

If you know absolutely nothing about a team then this is the one to use. Most often heard referring to unpronounceable Europa League teams or Tony Pulis’s Stoke.

Does The Simple Things Well

Most often used in reference to Claude Makalele, followed by a montage of Makalele playing short sideways passes on MOTD. Anyone can play short sideways passes in their own half.

Reaction Save

This one is saved for point blank shots that hit the goalkeeper on any part of their body. If the goalkeeper is already is that position before the ball is struck then it’s just plain old fashioned lucky.

Knows Where The Goal Is

Any striker that is in form and regularly hitting the net knows where the goal is. Demba Ba knows where the goal is. Presumably then Fernando Torres has forgotten where the goal is.

World Class

Often used when watching a player perform in a league game. e.g. Frank Lampard is world class. Errr, no. Frank Lampard is not world class, watch him wearing an England shirt if you want the evidence.
